The Ministry of Education has outlined the government’s key priorities for the university sector in 2025, centring on the development of a new Tertiary Education Strategy (TES) that emphasises lifting student achievement, boosting economic and innovation impact, widening access from all backgrounds and regions, deepening collaboration across tertiary providers and industries, and strengthening New Zealand’s international education connectivity. It also includes creating a new Tertiary Research Excellence Fund to replace the existing research performance framework, and a forthcoming review of institutional governance and quality assurance to reinforce the university system.
